I call these Cheater Baked Beans because I start with a can of pre-made baked beans. For all you purists out there, trust me, I can make some incredible homemade baked beans starting from scratch with dried beans all the way to several hours on the smoker. I just so happen to like the overall flavor of Bush’s Baked Beans and when time is a factor, they are a great base to start from and make your own.
I also use pre-cooked, chopped bacon that we get at Costco; not Bacon Bits, it’s really bacon. I love having it around to throw into a variety of dishes. Again, this is great whenever time is a factor.
Cheater Baked Beans
Author: Bear In The Pantry
Recipe type: Side Dish
Cuisine: American
Serves: 4-6
Ingredients
- 1 – 28 oz can of Bush’s Maple Flavor Baked Beans
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 – ½ onion, peeled and chopped
- 1 tbsp maple syrup
- ½ cup ketchup

- ½ cup packed brown sugar
- 1 cup chopped bacon
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350º F.
- Over medium heat, melt butter in a saucepan, throw in chopped onion and a pinch of salt. The salt will help the onions release their juices. Cook until translucent and soft, about 10 minutes. Add maple syrup and cook for 1-2 minutes until onions are well coated.
- Add in all other ingredients, stir well to combine, cover saucepan and put in oven for 30 minutes.
- After 30 minutes, remove lid from saucepan, stir, put back in oven without lid, bake for 30 more minutes.
- Stir, salt and pepper to taste. Let cool 5 minutes before serving.
Hey there! I *love* Cheater Baked Beans. I make some that have apple, pecan, a bit of brown sugar, and a slug of sweet chili sauce. Yours sound better – I’m definitely making these next time!
Yum!!! I love adding apple and pecan to yummy, savory things. I’ll have to try that at some point. These beans are truly rockin’ … I’ll post the more labor intensive version soon. They are truly ‘from scratch’ baked beans that have garnered some serious praise.
